Hey there,

Thanks for letting me in here! I did lurk the on old forum while hunting for VQ info! I am building an VQ30DET powered R32 Skyline, and I thought I'd share the build journey!

Progress has been very slow (only got a place with a garage a year or so ago and free time isn't my friend unfortunately) and I still a long long way to go!

Anyway, here is the journey so far!

It all started with a long hunt to find a straight/clean R32! Finally after months of hunting found one that had been garaged for a few years; an unmolested 1990 GTS in great condition inside and out!

First up needed some new wheels, being a cheap arse bought a set of Rota 9.5's +15 all round until I could afford something better.
Image

As the new wheels were 5 stud, the crappy old breaks etc. had to go. 5 stud conversion done using R33 25DET gear.

It seemed to be my lucky day, came across factory m-spec sides and rears, which are rather hard to find these days.
Image

Right, now came the important part! The RB20DE auto was just not going to cut it. A VQ30DET popped up and I thought what the hell, how bad can it go!
Image

Picked up 350z 6-speed to go with the VQ.
Image

One last shot before the carnage started!

Begin the carnage

Out comes the dirty old RB
Image

Off comes the VQ auto gear

New running gear!
-Maxima flywheel
-SR20 Racing Cluth

Plenty more to come, although I'm in no hurry to finish it and ill no doubt have some questions for you guys when I get stuck :P

Nice man another Skyline. Let the hard work begin. In South Africa there was a TV commercial from Nissan with the slogan :"Life's a journey. Enjoy the ride" :D :D

Cheers guys.

I have the manual pilot bushing for the 350z box, if I remove the auto one is there anything else I need? An adaptor/spacer?

Unpacked the maxima flywheel and unfortunately it isn't in the greatest shape. Off to get machined it goes!

See the ring on the back of your auto flex plate?
there is a sensor toward the bottom of the engine that reads this, without it the engine wont run (Y33 models...y34 does not have this)

so does the maxima flywheel have the cam ring at the back?

I have a custom flywheel...you don't reinstall the auto spacer for (2mm or so slip ring between flywheel and crank)...i cant comment on the spacing of the Maxima flywheel, but generally no spacer rings on manual Nissan.

I do see it!

The maxima flywheel has the same thing, pretty much identical with the same number of teeth. I was told this setup had been used before, so will give it a go with fingers crossed haha.

If it fails I guess ill be going to the custom flywheel aftermarket ecu route :)

nice, i wonder if the maxima one is pretty much the same as my "custom" one. I was told mine suits a rb25 push type clutch.

Just looked up the "extreme clutch" range as they have an easy to read website.

Maxima :
240x24x25.5mm
KNI24010-1A

R33
240x24x25.5mm
KNI24001-1A

Looks like they have identical dimensions, just different part numbers, but that could be because the r33 delivers more power. might be best to check with clutch person tho.

Quick update, haven't had much free time lately.

Flywheel turned out to be pretty rough, cost a small fortune but was able to be saved (just).
Image

Noticed that oil had been leaking from the rear housing...

So picked up a new one!

Next mission is to remove the auto spigot bush and replace it with the manual one, had a go with the grease trick but not a lot of luck. Will have another go tonight, otherwise I might need to find a proper removal tool (or maybe a dynabolt)
